How to Source Export-Quality Basmati Rice

Basmati rice is graded by variety, grain length, ageing and processing style, and small specification differences change price significantly. Here is what to check before placing a bulk order.

Variety and grain length: 1121 basmati offers the longest grain (8.3 mm+ average) and commands premium retail positioning. Traditional and 1509 varieties price lower with shorter grains. Always specify average grain length and permissible broken percentage (1-2% for premium packs).

Processing type: Steam (grain steamed before milling, firm and aromatic), Sella / parboiled (golden or white, very firm grains suited to biryani and catering), and Raw (white, delicate aroma). Each behaves differently on cooking, so match the type to your end market.

Ageing: well-aged rice (12-24 months) elongates more on cooking and fetches better repeat sales. Ask for the crop year and ageing confirmation in the contract.

Certifications and documents: for most markets you will need FSSAI, APEDA registration, a phytosanitary certificate and a certificate of origin. Gulf and EU buyers should also confirm pesticide-residue compliance for their jurisdiction.

Packing: 5/10/25/50 kg PP or jute bags are standard, with private-label printing available at container volumes. Confirm bag weight tolerance and fumigation before dispatch.
