Documents Required for Importing from India

Clean documentation is what separates a smooth customs clearance from a container stuck at port. Here is the standard paper set for imports from India.

Commercial invoice: the master document, product description, HS code, quantity, unit price, Incoterm and payment terms. Errors here cascade into every other document.

Packing list: itemised cartons/bags, net and gross weights, and container numbers. Customs and your warehouse both rely on it.

Certificate of origin: issued by an authorised chamber, it determines duty treatment in your country, especially where preferential trade agreements apply.

Bill of lading (sea) or airway bill (air): the transport contract and title document. Confirm consignee and notify-party details exactly match your import licence.

Product-specific certificates: phytosanitary for agricultural goods, fumigation for wood packing, lab/quality certificates where the buyer or destination requires them, and pre-shipment inspection certificates for regulated categories.

Financial documents: under LC payment, every document must match the credit terms letter-perfect, banks reject on discrepancies, not intent.
